i have a friend who cans. i find this fascinating. first of all, because the process is called canning, while clearly the receptacle involved is a jar. it should be called jarring. but the word jarring has already a meaning which might not be favorably associated with food products (to have an irritating, unsettling, or unpleasantly disturbing effect on somebody or something.) so, canning it is. second of all, upon a first encounter with my friend the assumption that she's an avid canner would hardly come to mind. its like you think you know a person and then one day, "suprise! i can!" astounding. so, i made her a set of personalized can-toppers. now instead she can say, "see those cans? yes, those. those are my cans. i canned those."
